The film has earned about $20 million through Friday (and $32 million worldwide over the same period), so there’s no doubt that the film will be among the biggest performers this weekend and likely all year. The only question is, how high can it fly?

Last year, the hyper-realistic, science-challenging film “Gravity” shocked viewers, grossing $716 million. US$ in global revenue. Half of the ten highest-grossing films of all time are science fiction films of one kind or another. These five films grossed $7.7 billion at the box office in less than five years (from December 2009 to November 2014). The other 50 top-grossing films add another $13.6 billion from 19 additional sci-fi-oriented films, or a total of more than $21 billion in revenue from 24 sci-fi pictures out of 60 films.
This number does not include fantasy films such as The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which are sometimes included in the broader science fiction/fantasy list. However, this includes films such as Transformers and Iron Man, which clearly contain science fiction elements, although some would say that these films are closer to “sci-fi” because many of their technologies are not firmly rooted in real science. . I’m using the more traditional science fiction model here.
I exclude television productions from this list and focus only on feature films. Otherwise Earth to the Moon would be great here. Also not on the list are the documentaries In the Shadow of the Moon and IMAX Hubble 3D, although those are great because I want to stick to traditional feature films. So consider this their honorable remembrance.
So let’s count down the ten best space travel movies of all time and see how they fared at the box office…

10. Contact – A realistic look at the scenario of humanity’s first contact with aliens and our first attempts at interstellar travel to meet them. It grossed $171 million on a $90 million budget. Science fiction fans were pleased, although the choice to change the story to include a preacher who equates science with faith rubbed some viewers the wrong way.
9. 2010: The Year We Made Contact – This often-forgotten sequel to another film on my list doesn’t try to emulate its predecessor, instead opting for its simpler approach. Its $40 million box office was a disappointment with a production cost of $28 million, but it’s actually a great sci-fi story grounded in realism with a strong cast and stunning effects.
8. Apollo 13 – One of only two true stories on the list and one of the most widely known, with nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Heightened realism, human drama, and grounding in true events helped this $52 million-budgeted film reach $355 million at the global box office, and it remains one of the best true stories ever made.
7. The Moon is a low-budget indie sci-fi film that feels much bigger, with great effects and strong performances and themes. Another case of extreme realism and hard science fiction, the $5 million budget returned $10 million in theatrical revenue, developed a cult following when it was released at home, and generated several million more in sales and rentals.

6. Gravity – Ultra-realistic visual effects that will amaze the audience, 3D, one of the best movies, and a simple but exciting survival story. This film captured the audience’s imagination and did not let go. It cost $100 million to produce (a surprising number since it sounds much more expensive), grossed $716 million at the box office, and won Best Director at the Academy Awards.
5. Solaris is a remake of another film on this list and one of the few remakes that manages to maintain the greatness of the original while looking at the story from a new and unique perspective. Unfortunately, its $47 million budget fell short of the $30 million it required in theaters worldwide, but it was at least well received by sci-fi fans and among critics.
4. Solaris is the first feature film adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s novel, and while the above remake is gorgeous, the original is pure brilliance. It cost about $1 million to produce, but there is no good data on its theatrical revenues, but it grossed about $5-10 million in Russia, and was released in limited runs in the rest of the world a few years later.
3. Interstellar – This is Nolan’s best film to date, and a great achievement in sci-fi cinema. I’m sure that despite the mixed reception at the moment, the film will be more appreciated in the years to come. 2. The Right Stuff – The best story about pilots, aviation, and true events ever filmed. It is larger than life, but the genius is that it is real and thus reflects a time when humanity itself sought to become larger than life itself. Unfortunately, the $27 million budget only grossed $21 million at the box office, thanks in part to a politically motivated smear campaign.
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey – Nothing other than the best sci-fi film in history can top this list, a stunningly epic concept of space travel. The incredible power of its visuals, given that most of the effects were created in 1966, inspires awe with every viewing. The film cost $12 million, grossed $68 million in theaters and was released multiple times. Despite a misleadingly mixed early reaction upon its release, the film has been widely hailed as a masterpiece.
