Twitter & Instagram: @britany_murphs Freelance photographer, artist and writer. Note: I love all things edgy, artistic, literary, and musical. The days of summer are almost over. But we won’t be saying goodbye to warm temperatures for a while, especially in San Diego. One of the best ways to beat the heat but still enjoy the outdoors is to watch a nature film. Because of the work we do bringing nature to the places where we work and live, we pay special attention to films that show the natural world around us.
We’re not particularly big fans of movies like Man vs. Nature. Think Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant. Nature can be cruel and threatening to humans. What we are much more interested in is the spectacular landscapes, science and creatures and how people relate to them. This is the whole scientific theory of biophilia. Nothing makes it more real than seeing it on screen.
These are our favorites. We have included both feature films and documentaries. You can watch the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet or stream all kinds of nature programming on Netflix or Hulu, but who has that time? Check them out and we promise you won’t be disappointed.

The last known photo of Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amy Hugenard, before they were murdered in October 2003.
Grizzly Man (2005): Director Werner Herzog makes a documentary about grizzly expert Timothy Treadwell and his call to live among a group of wild grizzly bears on an Alaskan wildlife refuge. Herzog used some of Treadwell’s own video footage. Treadwell was a dedicated conservationist with a passion for adventure. But he was also a little crazy. He believed he had bridged the gap between humans and bears. But after living with them for 13 years, the bear attacked him and his girlfriend, killing them both. This happened in October, when the bears are gathering food in preparation for hibernation. The following spring, my father and I shot grizzlies about a dozen miles east of where Treadwell had set up his camp. At the time I didn’t know him or his story. It turned out there was a video camera operating from Treadwell’s tent, and the entire attack was recorded on audio, as the camera still had the lens cap on. It’s a chilling reminder of the cold realities of nature: eat or be eaten.
Encounters at the End of the World (2007) is another film by Werner Herzog. This time he goes to Antarctica. He lives with scientists at the McMurdo Research Station, the largest Antarctic research center in the United States. Duke explores both desert landscapes from the outside, and also gets inside the minds of scientists who are willing to leave civilization and endure harsh living conditions to learn more about the wildlife and natural wonders of Antarctica.
March of the Penguins (2003) is another Antarctic documentary you’ve probably seen. At the end of each Antarctic summer, emperor penguins from the South Pole travel to their traditional breeding grounds. Director Luc Jacquet tells the story of his journey across the Tundra and his struggle to lay an egg and then raise a newborn penguin chick in the harsh environment. In 2005, it won the Oscar for the best documentary film.
Best Movies Of 2024 So Far
Samsara (2012) – Director Ron Fricke creates a global travelogue and lets photography and music tell the story. It explores 25 countries, including the Himalayas, the American Southwest, European cathedrals and other beautiful places. It took five years to produce. “Samsara” means “journey” in Sanskrit. This is one of the few films shot on 70mm in the last 40 years. Both Cinefix and Taste of Cinema named it one of the 10 greatest films of all time (along with Lawrence of Arabia and 2001: A Space Odyssey).
Wild (2014) – This film is a fictional film, but based on the true story of Cheryl Stadt, played by Reese Witherspoon. Frustrated by her chaotic life and the death of her mother, she decides to hike the entire Pacific Coast Trail by herself. It is a difficult and difficult road, especially for someone without experience and training. What I love about this movie is that Cheryl Strayed instinctively looked to nature to heal herself – and she did.
Dr. Seuss’ story about environmental issues, The Lorax, was written back in 1971 and took 41 years to film.
The Lorax (2012) – We can always count on Dr. Seuss to tell the simple truth. He wrote The Lorax in 1971 as a children’s story to express his concern about the damage humans were causing to the environment. The Lorax stands up for the trees against the “once lies” evil. The film was shot only in 2012. Many people like the original book best, but the movie brought the message to many more people. Some of the voice actors include Zac Efron (who plays 12-year-old Ted, just like my son), Taylor Swift, and Danny DeVito as the Lorax, who lets greed destroy his respect for nature until he realizes it’s a mistake. .
Best New Movies On Netflix This Week: November 19th 20th, 2022
The Lion King (1994) – Not as strange a choice as you might think! Sure, the film is filled with songs and humor at times, but it really tells the story of the circle of life – which to me is just another way of describing nature. Even the death in the film Mufasa, Simba the Lion’s father is due to panic about the hitbi. It is the ninth highest grossing animated film of all time. Disney is currently working on a new live-action CGI version.
Into the Wild (2007) – Another film set in Alaska and another film that tells the true life story of a man who seeks a life immersed in nature to help find his true calling. This time it’s a Sean Penn film about a recent college graduate from a wealthy family. To their horror, he gets rid of all his possessions and takes off. It is based on the book of the same name by author Jon Krakauer, who has written many real-life adventure books that are worth reading. I read this many years ago and really liked it.
Whale Rider is a fictional story about real people in a real place, the Maori culture of New Zealand.
Whale Rider (2002) is a fictional story about a Maori girl’s journey around the world. It focuses on her relationships and understanding of nature and the southern right whales, which are so important and hold great symbolism for her and her entire tribe. When Pi rescues the whales, bringing them safely to sea, she inherits her role as leader, even though it traditionally belongs to men. The wisdom of nature prevails.
Adventure Movies About Hiking
Planet Earth (2006) – The BBC had to make an exception for this series. Each episode will take you to mountains, plains, jungles, forests, caves and ice fields. We experience sandstorms, animal migration, rainfall and more – all captured on film, it takes 400 minutes of original film to capture just the one minute of film we see. There are a total of 11 original episodes. There’s also Planet Earth II – and Planet Earth III will arrive around 2027.
