Best Courtroom Movies – Perhaps one of the reasons courtroom dramas are so reliable is that these films, like a court case, follow a time-honored protocol. Whether plaintiffs or defendants, we are on the side of a progressive protagonist who needs the help of an experienced lawyer to fight injustice.
When we enter the courtroom, we see all the tools of the establishment that we have to fight: a bastard judge, a bastard chief prosecutor in a very elegant suit, an untenable procedure and, above all, the opinions of the jury – and, the implication is, also you.

It says something if you watch a depiction of a British trial that you’ll feel changed if no one bangs the gavel (just an American thing), calling the judge “your honor” (in almost all cases it’s “sir”, “madam”‘, ‘ my lord’, or ‘my lady’) or starts shouting complaints in the middle of the other party’s case (this simply doesn’t happen).
It’s not just the characters that are put to the test. It’s the establishment, the system, an entire country, and you and me looking forward.
Anyway, here we are: I swear by Sidney Lumet that I will faithfully experience these films and give a true opinion based on the evidence.
It is one of the earliest surviving courtroom dramas and interestingly shows that cinema as a technology has been tied to notions of reality and truth since its earliest days. A scientist shows some friends his camera in his laboratory. They leave, but when someone reenters the room, the scientist is dead. The woman he finds is dragged there by the police, but she declares her innocence. So who killed him? The answer lies in the camera, the key moment of which is in a climactic scene in a courtroom as we watch the assembled masses watch the evidence. It’s only three minutes long and even though it’s not on any of the streams, you can appreciate it if you check it out a bit. There’s even a cameo by early directorial pioneer DW Griffith (pictured in a hat, with Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks after he founded United Artists), who did the real thing, dammit.

Anthology films for the BBC tell the story of the Mangrove Nine, a group of activists who came together in 1970 to support a Notting Hill restaurant that was repeatedly raided by police in a concerted effort to intimidate and pollute the area’s Caribbean community. The police did not appreciate their complaints and indicted nine people on charges of disorder and nuisance. The case is abusive and the courts have appealed against the nine black defendants, but they accept the system. The game is directed by
And Letitia Wright as British Black Panther leader Altheia Jones-LeCointe, and McQueen’s direction is as convincing and beautiful as you’d expect.
This is perhaps the cornerstone of the classic courtroom drama. An intelligent and astute lawyer takes on a nearly impossible case that strikes at the heart of our ideas of morality, and currently defends the little man who celebrates the brutality of ‘and the great man – usually the state – can be. This intelligent and cunning lawyer is the unpredictable and charming Jimmy Stewart, and his little man is Lieutenant “Manny” Manion, accused of killing the innkeeper Barney Quill. Without wanting to take anything away, the truth is nothing more than entertainment and fascination; it’s a dark and heartbreaking bust that reminds you of how sweaty everyone involved in the search for the truth is.
Keanu Reeves is a cynical and confused mess as a successful and morally ambiguous lawyer who is offered the career opportunity of a lifetime by a charismatic, enigmatic and possibly demonic New York CEO, played by Al Pacino. He’s flashy, kitschy and hammy in the best way, as Pacino alternately screams and laughs in an attempt to lure Keanu into his fold. Being a supernatural horror, it also has its moments, especially in a disturbing sequence involving Reeves’ wife, played by Charlize Theron. It’s long and dense, but if you look past its flaws and give in, this is Hollywood cinema of the most interesting order.

Could they just hire their unconventional cousin to protect them, who had just passed the bar exam? The case of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx) soon gives him the reason he’s been looking for: McMillian is on death row based on the worst evidence.
